What Etsy wants from your ten photos

Etsy gives you ten image slots and most shops fill three. The other seven are where the questions get answered — scale, texture, what is actually in the box.

Sized and staged for Etsy

Etsy listing photos

Etsy is unusually permissive about photographs. There is no pure-white requirement, no forbidden background, no minimum you have to hit before the listing goes live. The platform recommends a large image on the long edge and leaves the rest to you.

That freedom is the problem. Where Amazon tells you exactly what to produce, Etsy lets you publish a dark photo of a candle on a kitchen counter and simply ranks it below somebody who did better. Nothing tells you why.

The first image is also cropped square in search results, so anything you compose for a wide frame loses its edges before a buyer ever clicks.

Why your photos are costing you sales

The ten slots are the whole opportunity and almost nobody uses them. A shop with three photographs is answering "what does it look like" and leaving "how big is it", "what is the surface like", "what arrives in the parcel" and "what does it look like in a room" to the buyer's imagination — which defaults to pessimism.

The slots that consistently earn their place: the object alone, a scale reference, a close detail of the making, the piece in use, and the packaging as it ships.

It has to still be your item

You do not need ten separate photo sessions. One accurate photograph of the piece produces the clean shot, the styled shot, the in-room shot and the square crop, and the detail and scale frames are two more minutes at the bench with the same phone.

  • Fill the ten slots from one photograph instead of ten setups
  • A square-safe first image, so the search crop takes nothing important
  • The same look across every listing, which is what makes a shop read as a shop
  • Greek and English listings from the same source photo

Questions people ask before they sign up

Does Etsy require a white background?
No. Etsy has no background requirement at all, which is what separates it from Amazon. A clean background still tends to perform well as the first image because it survives the square crop, but styled and lifestyle photographs are entirely allowed.
What size should the images be?
Etsy recommends a large image on the longest edge and its guidance has changed over time, so check the current seller handbook rather than trusting a number on any third-party page. Shoot at full resolution and you will be above whatever it says.
Is AI-staged photography allowed?
Etsy requires that listing photographs represent the actual item for sale. Restaging your own photograph keeps the object, its finish and its markings intact and changes the setting around it — the piece in the picture is the piece in the parcel. Generating an item you do not have would not be allowed, and is not what this does.
Should the first photo be square?
Compose it so it survives a square crop. Search results crop the first image, so leave margin and keep the subject central rather than filling a wide frame edge to edge.
